Saxjonz, re; your comment that maybe a newer bike might satisfy me more, I have a 77 kz 1000 that I am going to restore totally period correct but the 650 I'm doing now is my attempt at putting some more modern and most of all custom touches where I feel I would like them. Isn't that how it is with gear heads? Improve, personalize and make it your own?..my two cents worth..kzk

79 kz650SR, fenders and rear shocks from Z1000 classic
78 650c, clubmans, 750 engine,solo seat etc..

Puch scooter and other crap too numerous to mention...

I do agree though that a "modding or custom" category in the forum would be good.

you can make a small set of hangers with holes to bolt through the frames rear most tail mount holes and mount the light and plate like this(see picture) too..it takes very little time and gives a super clean finish when done right

The 650D(SR) is a little different in the rear frame, and is missing a plastic duckbill, but I have seen some tails and lights added to an SR.
Here's how mine ZX6E light mounts:

Hey Kenny, Z1E most likely doesn't CARRY the fenderless kit; however they will likely be able to order it from PMC in Japan, I've seen it in the PMC catalog before. I'd send a link, but I'll have to get back to you on that one, I can't dig it up right now at work. Also, I'm not sure how the earthquake affected orders coming from Japan.

IMO, a fenderless kit with a 4-into-1 exhaust and coil-over rear shocks would look priceless!!!

1980 LTD 550- Dalton Highway survivor!

If it has tits or tires, it'll give you problems!

Wow, great response guys, all great looking bikes with good examples to use for inspiration to fab up my own set up. The sr I'm using is a real good runner so thats why I want to use it. This time I don't want to get too carried away with it just going to add the tail piece and set up a solo seat with the rear controls and clubmans, already has a pipe on it and electronic ignition waitng so that about as far as drivetrain will go. I have a 650c and a couple of b's waiting in the wings so the next one will be a little more radical.( I have a sawzall and I'm not afraid to use it) ) Thanks again for all the pics and advice.. and for all you purists out there I did pic up a pretty much bone stock 77 kz 1000 that will be done all period correct and original. she's rough but all there, just working on getting regi for it now and will start that one in the fall if all goes well..

I've got a soft spot for those SR 650's, I was never fond of the 650's tale. That was the first street bike I had. I would love to find another one just to tinker on and ride.
