gauge bulbs
15 Mar 2011 09:13
new to the site here. Just brought home a 1980 KZ750 with 7500 actual miles. The bike is perfect except that the tach is not illuminated. Anyone have insight to the quickest way to get to those bulbs? thanks in advance.

pull the tach, spedo mounting bracket off and the tach. cover has a small screw on the end. 2 nuts hold the tach onto the mount. pull the tach off the mount and then you can get to them

The light bulbs may be of the push and turn type or the #168/#194 baseless bulbs.

I'll give that a try, it is a Four. It has a small cafe-style fairing that will have to come off.

If the bulb holders are rubber, use a light coating of silicone grease(rub it on with your fingers, this prevents the holders from drying out and cracking.

Found this post. Having same problem with my 81 750/4. I can't get to the bulbs.
I read in other posts you just have to pry them out the back. Is that correct?
I also read about cutting the chrome ring with a dremel to get to the innards and JB welding it back together.
I took it all screws out and nothing seems to budge, and I don't want to break anything. Cutting the ring seems pretty extreme just to change some bulbs.
PS: These "Captcha" codes are quite hard to read

You don't need to cut anything to replace the gauge bulbs. Just remove the gauge and the bulb holders pull out of the back of the gauge. Ed

Thanks Ed. I tried pulling em out, but they're in there pretty tight. I gave up before I screwed anything up.

It might help to put a little rubber lube on them where they connect with the gauge body. Just be sure not to get the lube inside the body or it might affect the gauge internals. Ed

Get some silicone spray, put some on a cotton swab, apply it to the bulb holders & let it work for a while. The rubber bulb holders are probably stuck to the back side of the instruments.

YEA! I AGREE!!
guess I'm blind glad to know i have company lol
i would look at the base of those bulbs and see if you can change them to L.E.D. or replacement L.E.D. bulbs so you wont have to go threw all of this again.
If you cant find them as a ready made you can buy L.E.D.'s on Ebay real cheap and get the correct resistor and make them your self.
did the whole dash in a monte carlo the was "un serviceable" also a Freight liner Classic. so they can hold to the vibration either way
