static timing possible issue was created by stonemaster
setting static timing a little while ago and had an interesting issue, its been a while since I've done it but i dont remember having to have the ignition on to do so, I'm using a continuity only tester. When the key is off, and I separate the points, I still get a beep, but when the key is on the beep stops when the points open as per the manual and my experience. Is this correct?/ i have a new wiring harness from Z1 ignition switch and all. The lights work as they are supposed to, no fuse blowing or anything, the starter works as well so no ther apparent electrical problems... Please advise
thanx

confused

EDIT
I can get the beep to stop with the key off but I HAVE TO SPREAD THE POINTS alot

There are two (or more ways) to do it.

One way is with power on and use a voltmeter to time it.

The other way is with no power at all and using an ohmeter/continuity tester. To do this, you have to time one set of points at a time, but you have to slip a paper card into the other set of points. This is because the two sets of points have a common wiring point at the coils. To isolate one circuit at a time, you have to slip a piece of paper into the other points so they make no contact.
