Speedometer Swapping?
12 Mar 2011 09:42
So what's the general consensus on whether or not you can put an older year KZ speedometer on an 80s KZ? My speedo is broken (from an older bike - went up to 120 mph) and I am going to replace it, but can I go with a late 70s speedo if the bracket is the same? The one I had WAS from an older bike, but I'm concerned that the PO put it on without realizing that it wouldn't be accurate. The main thing I'm concerned with is the gearing of the older speedometer being accurate if transplanted onto an 80s bike.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I have 1980 KZ1000 that had the 85 mph speedo that I hated with a passion, I replaced with a 75-76 speedo from a 900 and it works just fine. I think the gear box speedo (speed sender unit on from hud) on most of the KZ were the same, so you should be able swap instruments without any problems. ( again I think this is correct, but if someone else says other wise, I listen to them ) I would like to ask how are you going to reclamp the halves together again? Have you found someway to replace the steel band.

I'm going to try to use either bondo or jb weld to create a bond between the two pieces, with some silicone gasket stuff to seal it. Then, I want to get my hands on some hockey tape, and mask up the black part of the speedometer, which is scratched and nasty looking. I'll put up some pictures if I do it. If not, I'll have to find a new tachometer as well.

Do a search for Canyon Dancer, he used to post here.
He restores tachs and speedometers to like new condition, including that band.
