You can get rid of the ignitor box if you're replacing the stock electronic ignition. You have to keep the reg/rect for the charging system. Two different parts of the motorcycle.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

As mentioned, the regulator/rectifier controls the charging system and is not involved with the ignition system.

So there is no way around the reg/rec to make the harness easer and cheaper to do.
I know I have to get a new stator $$$$$$ but add the reg/rec some more $$$$ oh yea.

Is it for sure that the existing stator is toast?
As they may be tested for output and sometimes re-wound.

Am thinking reg/rec need replacing more often than stators.

Charging components consist of alternator, rectifier and voltage regulator.
Alternator generates AC current supplied to Rectifier which changes current to DC supplied to Regulator which charges the battery and prevents over-charging.

Basic purpose of the charging system is simply to keep the battery charged.
Other electrical components (chassis and ignition) work off the battery and couldn't care less what keeps the battery charged.
So long as the battery remains charged, electrical functions on the bike will perform just fine without any charging system components whatever.
Some race bikes have only a battery and no charging components, which saves weight and may increase cornering clearance (sans oem alternator cover).

With a good fully charged battery, an easy simple basic charging system check is to measure voltage across the battery terminals with engine at idle (look for about 13+ volts DC) and at 4000 rpm (look for about 14~15 volts DC).

Good Fortune! :)

If you tried to use the charging system without a regulator and rectifier, it would quickly burn out the ignition system and possibly any related wiring.

The stators put out about 70 volts Alternating Current at 4000 rpm on the bigger 4's, I'd imagine your bike's output is similar.

Batteries do not like Alternating Current and will overcharge/fail and strand you if this is attempted.

Some rider's have removed the stator, but now they have no way to charge the battery making for a total loss system.

Kinda limits your driving distance this way.......
