plug wire choices
01 Mar 2011 06:47
Hey guys i was just wondering what kind of plug wires you use, i have just recently acquired a dyna s and dyna 3 ohm coils. i know that suppression wires are something that many suggest and i am totally ok with that idea however i read somewhere that someone liked to run solid core wires?? is this beneficial at all? and if so could i just replace my plugs with resistor plugs and be alright?
i just want to get these things ordered and i dont know enough about electronics to make a good decision... at least i feel like, if anyone has this setup please let me know what wires i should run, or any of our many electronics gurus gimme a hint!!
Thanks in advance

7mm sparkplug wires(or high tension leads for some people) will fit motorcycle ignition coil ports.
Surpression sparkplug wires are designed to reduce the electrical noise when the gap in the sparkplug is bridged.
The choice is your's as to what you want to run on the engine. Just don't use surpression sparkplug wires with sparkplugs with the "R" in the part number as this indicates a resistor built in.Doing so may lower the spark energy having you chase a carb problem.
If your bike has FI or other sensitive electronics, it might be a good idea to use surpression sparkplug wires.

I just went the Dyna S and Dyna 3.0 ohm coil route too, I've been extremely pleased, I must have been having condenser problems before because the bike ran like new once I converted!
I went with MSD 8.5mm Super Conductor wires ( www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-34039/ ) and MSD boots (a pair of these www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-3326/ and a pair of these www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-3327/ )
Overkill? No such thing

I should also note that I had to do some McGuyvering to get the wires in the coils.

I run the 7mm Copper Core Dyna wires from Z1E and am happy with them.

They match the "burnt orange/reddish metallic" paint on my tank quite well. For simplicity's sake, I'd recomend the Dyna wires.
Another popular option are Taylor ignition wires. They offer close to a dozen different colors.

For most of these older bikes, the copper core are the best bet. However, if you have a radio, intercom, radar detector, GPS or other complex electronics, then use the suppression wires, or suppression caps or plugs.
If you ride with other people who have any of these complex electronics, use suppression wires or suppression cap or plugs to avoid irritating them.....

Would an acewell computer be considered a "complex electronic"???

just a note, i would not recommend the NGK plug caps/boots. I was once pushing my bike, and my knee gently bumped against the plug cap on my #1 cylinder. Broke the cap and had to ride home with exposed wire. Very bad
