Does anyone know if the speedo/tach bulbs are different from the center console instrument bulbs? I need to replace the speedo/tach bulbs. I would just pull one to find out but I'm not near my bike. 1157/1156? What are the differences?

They are the same. Easiest to find is a #53 bulb, but they are not as bright as the original bulbs.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

As RonKZ650 said, they are the same. The originals are Stanley 12V 3.4W. They can still be found on the internet if not at a local motorcycle parts counter. Ed

Im a little confused. So the instrument bulbs are all the same. I can use a 1156/1157 and #53 bulb for the speedo/tach backlight?

I thought 1156/1157 bulbs are turn signal bulbs that are much bigger than instrument bulbs. Also, their wattage is around 25 - 29 instead of 3.4; I don't think they will make a good substitute. Ed

Guarantee that 1156/1157 bulbs are WAYYYY bigger than instrument bulbs and won't fit in the sockets. 1156/7 are for tail lights and turn signals, around 8W on the "dimmer" filament and 18W on the brighter filament. I recall the instrument illuminators and the "dashboard" lights are about 3.4W. I think they interchange, but 1156/7 won't fit.

Yep #53 bulb was perfect for the speedo/tach. 1156 for stop lights and 1157 for turn signalsl.

Thanks for the help everyone.

I know this is old, but this does come up every now and then.

Supposedly genuine Stanley bulbs here, thanks to 650Ed ;) :
