Hello all,
i have an opportunity to get a Dyna S ignition for a pretty decent price ($110) is that even a good price???
just wondering what everyone thinks about the electronic ignition, i assume its waaaayyy less work and upkeep as compared to points.

not sure what bike you have but, I love my dynaS(KZ1000). I have dyna coils also. set it and forget it. runs smooth, starts easy,seems like no cranking at all just fires up. That seems like a decent price.

ah im sorry! i have a 650 SR from 78 and also a 79 but im thinking about the Dyna S and new coils in the spring! that would be great i love a quick start up!

I think the dynaS uses less power to make a spark than points so it starts easier. I don't think you have to have the dyna coils but it would help. Good luck

thanks a bunch, i doubt that the coils have been replaced and im building the bike for my girlfriend and i want reliability so i think ill just get both coils and ignition!

the coils are rated in "ohms" they sell different coils in different colors for different "ohms" so make sure you get the right ones for your application. I have 3 ohm coils. that bike in proper tune and such would probably be pretty reliable. Good luck my feet go cold think about my girlfriend riding a motorcycle!!

Dyna S doesn't require new coils, but they are a good investment. I have a Dyna S on one of my bikes and a Dyna 2000 on the other. Both work very well. BTW someone once told me that a properly tuned KZ should start immediately. This has been my experience with my KZ1000. That's the bike with the Dyna 2000.
BTW $110 is a good price for a NEW Dyna S.

hahah yea im a little skeptical and so are her parents but i have a good 79 that un restored to say the least and she will learn on that, and then HOPEFULLY move up to the 78 that is almost done

testarossa, thanks for the help, i have seen the dyna 2000s for almost 300 bucks and thats a bit out of the price range, however 110 for a new dyna S is totally do-able, is the install very difficult? i am a fast learner and extremely comfortable with my KZ's but electrical is not my favorite thing

The Dyna S requires coils with a primary resistance of at least 3 ohms - it'll work fine with your stock 650 coils, they're about 4 ohms primary if you have points ignition.
When you buy a new Dyna ignition it comes with installing instructions and a troubleshooting guide (if not both can be found at Dynatek's website) - installing and timing is pretty straight forward, several people here, myself included, have done it, so help is near if you should have problems/questions.
I installed mine some 4 years ago and the only time I touched it since was when I swapped engines, set and forget.

just go with what dyna recommends, it should come with detailed instructions easy to follow. also the dyna coils don't have the plug wires made into them like some factory coils do which means you can put whatever wires you want to on them(colored or whatever).
