Is it possible to use harley style hand controls
19 Jan 2011 22:29
I've recently received a 1977 KZ650 as wedding present and I'm looking to finish the custom work that was begun on it by the previous owner. It's already been boobed, chopped, and stretched. I want to completely rework the wiring, and I was wondering if I could use the all black controls, switches, and housing from a Sportster. I thought that as long as I use the proper diameter bars, then all else shouldn
't matter, since I'll have to 'make' my own harness anyway.

Hey, nice KawHarZookie there. Looks like somebody is trying to bribe you into being good!
If your switches physically mount on the bars they will work electrically. Just make sure they have all the functions you want and ohm everything out to verify they are all good.
Your other issue is whether the harness is to run inside the bars to your light bucket or outside. Just food for thought.

thanks for the info, i forgot to mention that I already purchased some Renthal bars, and I think I can run them inside. I'll know more when I finally pick the switches.

what JJ said, diameter is key to fitment and ohm on switch but I'm pretty sure that would be OK, I have some leftover switches from my chopper project if ur interested, I ran my wiring on the inside, its not too difficult with drag bars, Harley bars are bigger in diameter BTW1 to 11/4 depending

If you're drilling new holes in the bars for the wiring, keep in mind the resulting burr will act like a razor blade and strip the insulation from the wires, causing an electrical short blowing fuses/melting insulation.
Get a Dremel tool with some stone or diamond bits and carefully smooth away the burrs.

yea sure man, BTW I'm sure u will heat shrink before pulling ur wiring through the holes, thats just in case,
the first time I used Z bars, and managed to pull wire through TWICE without issues, just make sure u heat shrink for extra protection, some bars have indentations where u can drill holes at an angle, this will make it even easier
