Coil for my KZ250 single was created by scott s
When I picked up my KZ250 project, it had an automotive coil hose clamped to the down tube.
I haven't been able to find a stock replacement coil on ebay, etc. I was wondering what my options are?
I found some coils for the KL600 (and other 600 cc singles), but those bikes were mostly CDI bikes. My KZ250 has points. Will the CDI coils have the proper ohms to run the points ignition?
And I gotta warn ya....it sorta-kinda sounds like I know what I'm talking about, but electrical is my weak point.
Where can I find an inexpensive coil for a single cylinder engine that will work on my KZ250?
Will I need a condenser?
Will a coil from a small engine, say, a lawnmower, work?
Here's a link to one of the KL600 coils:

Oh, and if you know of a single cylinder engine from another manufacturer that may have a coil that will work....Honda, Suzuki, Chinese, moped, etc., ...please point me in that direction.

Go to somewhere like DennisKirk, and get a replacement single fire coil for points off of a older Snowmobile.
Somewhere here:
www.denniskirk.com/jsp/search/search.jsp...10&_requestid=277343
Might have to email for the Ohm Spec.

What year/model bike do you have (you should put the year/model in your signature)? Different models used different coils. For example, if yours happens to be a 1981-D2 the coil (part number 21121-1043) is still available from Kawasaki. Ed

The bike is 1980. It's the "D-1" model; the points fired unit.

Poring over my manual again, I see where they are checking resistance of the coil. They mention a Primary and Secindary winding (again...I don't know what that means), but here's what the manual says:
Primary winding
meter range: x 1 ohm
meter reading: 3.4~5.0 ohms
Secondary winding
meter range: x 1 ohm
meter reading: 9.1 ~14.0 ohms
That tells me I need at least a 3.4 -5.0 ohm coil, right?

Yes, primary is the small wire conections with secondary being where the sparkplug connection would go.
If possible, try to get the lower ohm coil for stronger spark.

Any 4 ohm motorcycle coil with a single lead should work fine.
Slightly lower ohm is ok, but will shorten points life marginally.
A car coil will burn the points pretty quickly, if the coil itself doesn't overheat.
