GPz1100 odd temp sensor voltage issue was created by Polar_Bus
A buddy of mine was so impressed riding my GPz1100 back last spring, he bought
one himself ! His '83 GPz1100 is in great condition and all original. However the bike has been plagued with severall running issues. The first
was the infamous rust in the tank, got that fixed, the second was a bad pressure
regulator, got that fixed, now we have a odd issue. The ECU is sending a fault
code #13 (engine temp sensor) I swapped ECU's with a know good unit and no change. I'm observing and
odd situation where there is 1.8V at the gray wire with the ignition key "off".
In this condition there is not supposed to be any voltage present. That's as far
as I got, and i'll keep updating this thread as I hopefully get this issue
fixed. Any thoughts on this issue ? Thanks!

I don't know the answer to your problem but if it turns out that the sensor is bad I have a new one. As far as I know they are no longer available from Kawasaki.

I have a complete set of known good gpz1100 electronics, and I swapped ECU's and no change. Same fault code. I also swapped a spare temp sensor, and still nothing.

If it were me, I'd be pulling the fuses one at a time to determine what circuit is powering the sensor. Sounds like a wiring problem crossing over from another circuit.

Maybe some of these from the FSM will help. Notice the Power/ Fuel pump relay has diodes. You should be able to check the system from the Computer/ ECM connector and pin everything out. Do you already have these tests in a FSM?

Also the Temp Sensor pin-out.

These are from a pdf service manual available for download on KZR, I've found it and posted the link a couple of times, search kz1000 pdf.

Thanks Motor Head for posting up the wiring diagrams, and yes I do have the KZ base manual and the GPz suppliment manual to help me figure this out. I played around a bit today, but dam it's cold and I can't work very long, but I swapped the CDI as another simple swap, and nope not the CDI. I also pulled all the plugs and they are sooty rich black. As I understand as soon as the ECU sends a fault code the DFI goes into "safe" mode which sounds like an rpm limiting very rich safety condition, so this is probably what's currently happening. Like Mfolks commented next step is to start yanking fuses to try and isolate the circut. I'm also going to inspect for a fried wire(s) or corrossion .

Follow the pin-outs from the ECU connector. Make sure that the grey wire has no other continuity except when hooked to the temp sensor. Check the sensor resistance as shown from the ECU connector. Make sure those voltage feeds to the ECU good dead at key off. Only external diodes I see are in the relay. But corrosion either in the harness or the ECU itself could back feed some voltage.
Good you have the FSM.
