Speedo Gear Retaining Nut

Ok, this is more mechanical than electrical, but this seems like the most likely category in which to post. Anyway, I have an '81 kz750 H ltd. The previous owner managed to snap the drive wire for the speedo off, inside the drive gear, so my only option is to remove the drive gear and replace it. The nut on the gear retainer is a 20mm aluminum nut(terrible idea)and although it is reachable after extensive socket grinding adaptation, even with some good solid pulls and dry ice trickery, it still won't budge. I popped the rocker cover off to make sure it wasn't secured from the inside with a lock ring or some such method, but no go. Has anyone gone through this? There is no need for it to be a left hand thread and I think i might be starting to lose hair over this whole ordeal. Also, I know the speedo gear and seal are available, but does anyone know if the aluminum retainer can be purchased?

Thanks
JOn
