Generic 0.20uF condensor source?
21 Apr 2006 08:29
Does anybody know where I could find a generic .20uF condensor for my KZ400? I would think any 12v auto condensor of the value would work.
Any websites out there that let you look them up by capacitance values (farads)?
I'm not having much luck...

Do they sell automotive condensors? I'd think the only thing they would carry would be axial or radial caps.

Radio Shack does not carry what you need. They only have 25 to 35 volt capacitors. To my knowledge they don't carry 1000 volt capacitors.
I'm not sure what voltage the stock condensers are rated for, but I know they'll have to endure a minimum of 400 volt spikes.
That's what's special about condensers, the high voltage they endure and the harsh environment they live in.
If you can find a condenser that will fit, you can probably get away with any conventional condenser.
Also, electrically, it doesn't matter where you mount it. You can mout it right by the coil if it won't fit under the cover. Just attach the lead to the negative side of the coil (where the wire to the points connects, but also leave the point's wire connected, obviously), then ground the condenser body to the engine using a wire etc. Or you can connect the condenser body to a good ground wire that you know for sure goes to the engine.

they don't make 0.20uf any more.
you'll have to settle for 0.22uf
you might try small engine, marine engine, auto, aircraft, or motorcycle parts store.
if you want something to mount on a circuit board...
you can search all these distributors for 0.22 uf
mouser.com
digikey.com
avnet.com
arrow.com
If you want kickbutt rugged 0.22uf 2KV then look at the IGBT snubber caps. Will be about $20/each
