Tach removal KZ650
22 Nov 2010 00:08
I want to rip the tach out of my 650 but when I disconnect it, I get some oil leakage. Is there a cover or something I need to do to make sure this doesn't leak?

Could perhaps fab up a plug similar to that used on the large fours.

Or possibly find a leak-proof screw-on cap to replace the knurled cable attachment, which cap could block leakage through the internal seal, but likely wouldn't block leakage getting past the o-ring where the tach drive unit nests inside the engine head.
Is there no interest in replacing the o-ring and seal to eliminate leakage in the existing tach drive?
Both these parts are inexpensive and readily available from Z1E.
When functioning correctly, should be zero oil leakage from the tach drive, even with tach cable completely removed.
Good Fortune!

I'm not sure what O-Ring and Seal you are talking of. Is this inside the engine case?
I would love to not have to put anything on it if I could, or I could do a cap.
When I mean it leaks, I mean that as soon as I unplug it, I get a small amount of oil that comes out with the cable. I'm not sure if that is just residual that will go away when cleaned and the cable out or if there is a leak somewhere or if its normal to do that.
I plan on not having a tach at all when I am done.

Reference the diagrams at Kawasaki.com.
One end of the tachometer cable attaches to the tach drive at the engine.
The tach drive unit at the engine has an o-ring & oil seal n stuff.

Got it. Thank you. I kept pulling up the diagram and not knowing which of the 90 pages to look on.
