Hi all, I`m a motorcycle mechanic and having some trouble with this bike. It starts on the first key position w no lights, second position it has lights but no starter. It has a block-off where the light switch should be, can someone tell me how the switch is supposed to operate, is it also a headlight switch or is the light on all the time? I`m losing about half the voltage thru the switch, even though it`s a new switch (aftermarket). Will try and jump the connections and see what I get. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello, Scott, and WELCOME to KZr! :cheer:

Might want to check out the nice full color wiring diagram for this model which may be found in "Filebase" under "KZ Information" in the green ribbon toward top of screen.

The switch details are also included.

Let us know of any difficulty in locating the diagram.

Good Fortune! :)

First are you sure you have a 77. There were only 2 models offered in 77. The B1 and the C1 and there are some differeces between the two regarding the handbar switches. The C models have a hazard flasher on the left hand side and the b does not. For both models the us version had an on/off switch for the headlights on the right side, but the candian model did not.

For the ingition switch the B1 has 4 leads and the C1 has 6 leads.

I have attached the wiring diagrams for both B1 and C1 models.

Thank you much, I did have the wrong diagram, this one is a "c" model bike I guess, has the hazard switch and no headlight switch. Will hit it again today, I found a hot ground at the tailight, something must be shorted hehe.

Almost every Kawasaki I've seen uses the following color codes for the rear of the bike:

RED,the running or tail light circuit.
BLUE,(sometimes with a RED stripe) the brake light circuit.
BLACK with YELLOW stripe, the ground circuit.(Also found all over the bike, and connects with the battery Negative terminal).

The model should be displayed in the vin number. As an example the following would be a B model
KZ650B-000001 - likewise a C model would be KZ650C-000001.

As a visual note the B models have spoke wheels, a single disk brake in front and a drum brake in the rear.

The C model has mag type wheels, dual disks in front and a single disk brake in the rear.

On my 77 650 C the second position is a parking light so it can be seen at night and your bike should have a light "on off" switch. It sounds like the right handle bar controls have been switched to a newer one.
