Small battery needed

As some of you may know I'm building a cafe racer hybrid thingy out of a gpz 750. I need a small battery. I have a ytz 10 which should be sufficient enough for power. but its too big. I was looking at a sealed lead acid battery to install. I am just wondering what i need to look for in a battery. is it CCA or Ah or both. Most of the SLA batteries dont list the CCA just the Ah of the battery.The stocker is rated at 12Ah. I am wondering if i can get away with a smaller one. Like a 5-10Ah battery. Or if combining two smaller 2Ah bateries would work. I thank you in advance for any info you can provide.

It would be nice if your project bike had a kick starter, but unless you find an older Kz1000 (about 1977-1980 I think),you'll need the cranking ability of a good battery for the electric starter.

I'd try Yuasa batteries and see what they have. The trouble I see with using two batteries is first space;how much do you have? The second is two batteries will tax your charging system possibly causing the regulator/rectifier to run hot/fail.

I am switching to a motobat, tired of replacing never starts!

Also goin to a starter out of an 02 zr7.

I think the sealed batteries are smaller but not by much.

make sure to connect the batteries in parallel for 12 volts, not series as this will be 24 volts(damaging your electrical system).

The picture looks like the connections are threaded for bolts, this is the best way for maximum current flow, just make sure to cover the connections with a heavy grease for corrosion protection after all work is done.

Yeah i was thinking if i ran two small batteries that i would wire them in series or get two 6v and wire them in parallel. Those motobatt are pretty good i have one in all of my bikes. The last one i had in my gs went bad took it to the place i bought it and they replaced it. I then took that battery home and it didn't work. the one ihave in there now has worked good since. I've had it in there for probably about 6 months. So im not really finding any batteries that are much smaller with the same power as the stocker.Like i said earlier i have the motobatt sealed ytz10. Which is 6"l 3.5"w and 3.75"h whih is pretty small but not quite small enough. There are some that are not as wide like 2.5"w so that would get me some more clearance. That motobatt place is here in town. they sell a bunch of bike stuff now.

thompsonmx100, if you use 6 volt batteries, you should wire them in series and if you use 12 volt batteries, wire them in parallel, this is opposite from what you said. IMHO, you should use 12 volt batteries in paralell, that way, the internal resistance of the other battery won't be an issue.

If your budget allows, you might want to look at Speedcell Battery Lithium Ferrous Lightweight Batteries. There's other brands, but they're pricey too.

Two 12ah, 6v batts in series would be equivalent to two 6ah, 12v batts in parallel. Both combos would be equivalent to one 12ah, 12v battery.

Two 6v in series guarantees both batteries get the same discharge/charge current.

Two 12v in parallel leaves the discharging/charging current up to each battery based on its condition and the battery voltage.

There are probably advantages and disadvantages to both setups.

I ended up using an AGM like the Motobatt, and it has been very reliable, but doesnt crank as hard as the liquid filled Yuasa I used to have.

Small batteries are crap in my opinion. They die much sooner than advertised for sure - experience! With the huge discharge required for our bikes when starting, size matters, and flooded cell batteries are best, AGM second, gelled electrolite is third.



With 2 small batteries, your increasing the number of connections/resistance. Not ideal.
Single battery is the way to go, else the manufacturers would have multiple small batteries all shrink wrapped together in some neat package for all new bikes. :laugh:

Smallest, most powerfull batteries seen lately are the lithium ion like Speedcell mentioned above. Schnitz Racing is selling them or try www.turntechbattery.com . Not cheap but have seen them on a mid / low 8's KZ dragbike and a street driven ZX14 that runs 8:85's (no nitrous) - both users are very happy.
