If a wiring diagram is needed ---

Click on Filebase under KZ Information in the green ribbon toward top of screen to get a choice of years, then select year, then model, then info item desired (such as wiring diagram).

For 1977 KZ750-B1, here's a link to the downloadable wiring diagram.

Check you fuses and make sure that the wires for the clutch lever i bypassed or hook up. the yellow and red wire is ignition so make sure thats all soldered up nicely as well. Try jumping the solenoid with a screwdriver when the bike is turned on to force the starter to crank and see if it will pop off. You could give it a shot of starter fluid to make damn sure that it fires. Good luck.

For sure the 77 KZ650B1 did not have the 4 way hazard switch on the left controls. The left controls on the 77 model are part # 46091-054 and used only on the 1977B1 so for the correct switch you need the exact B1 switch, but I can't imagine it being that hard to adapt the -055 that was used on multiple models. Sounds like someone had already done it.
46091-054=no hazard
46091-055=hazard

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Got everything to turn on! Its running and happy, now.

To fit the right side switch-wires comfortably it seems I'll have to cut into the switch itself. My Clubmans don't have feeding holes for the wires life the original handle bars did. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this? I don't have a drill press, which was the suggested method.

You'll ned to secure the handlebars in a vice(wrap them several times with rags to prevent damage)and then using either a corded or cordless drill, drill holes for the wires/switch gear.

When working with metal. I use a hammer and centerpunch to make a place for the drill to grab, otherwise it will skate all over.Keeping the drill speed slow with a lot of pressure is the best way to do it.

A high speed drill bit should go through the metal of the handlebar with some cutting oil as lubricant(rapid tap, tapmatic of the stinky dark cutting oil used for pipe work will work). To remove the resulting burrs, a Dremel tool with the small stone or Diamond bits will take them out quickly.

If your avatar is a pic of your bike it would appear that you do not have a 77 b1. The front brake on the 77 is in front of the fork and not behind it. This would also mean that the left hand switch would have the flasher - as all of the b models after the b1 did have the flasher. It would appear that you have 78 or later model.

On the frame it says its a 1977, is there another place to check what year the bike is?

Also- I ended up just taking a metal grinder to it with a soft filing grinding bit. Took awhile but I made enough room where I won't be pinching the wires.

I think it's possible to flip the forks around to get the caliper to the back side instead of up front. Not sure, though.

Been quite a long time since my last posting. I'll be honest, this winter nearly burned me out.

But all that has changed!

I'm moving forward my plans on cafe'n my KZ650B. I checked the frame, and it reads very clearly 06/77 KZ650B - 028114.

My next plan is to move onto the exhaust. I have a beautiful set of stock 2 into 1's. I refuse to hack them apart. Any suggestions on what I should upgrade to? I really enjoy the swoopy exhaust of modern sport bikes. A great example would be the picture i've attached. Uh, I've heard the best performance comes from 4 into 1s, would I be able to obtain that sort of high performance from this kind of system?

(I've no idea who owns this bike)

As I said in previous posts, I'm new to this sort of thing.. any and all advice is welcome.

Smart man. Original pipes are getting VERY rare. If you're interested in selling them you can probably cover the cost of a 4 into 1. Ed

From the vin # from the frame you have provided it appears that it is a 78 B2. The date on the tag is the build date not the model's year. The info below is correct to the best of my knowledge and it indicates that your bike was build in Japan - not the USA and that is is 1978 B2.

1977 KZ650B1
Japan:Frame 000101-026990
Engine 000101-045147

USA: Frame 500001-508015
Engine 000101-043949

1978 KZ650B2
Japan: Frame 027501-032200
Engine 046001-057787

USA: Frame 508016-515325
Engine 046001-057787

1978 KZ650B2A
Japan: Frame 033501-044828
Engine 061299-090685

USA: Frame 515326-523523
Engine 061299-092000

1979 KZ650B3
Japan: Frame 046201-047350
Engine: 092001-102148

USA: Frame 523524-533520
Engine 092001-116800

I do agree with ED the stock pipes are hard to find and if in good shape are in demand.
