Dyna 3 Ignition Install Questions - Longish was created by GPZ1100_Rider
Hi:
I received my new Dyna 3 ignition yesterday and was going over the installation instructions. They look pretty straight-forward.
But, what to do with the old IC igniter? From a past question, I was told that it replaces the IC igniter, my goal. I saw another posting for a 550 I think, that stated the the IC igniter is usually bypassed or removed altogether.
Installation instructions say to plug the last two remaining wires into where the original "points" connected, matching the colors. Well this is replacing the stock electronic ignition, not a points system. The old pickup coils had four wires total and plugged into the IC igniter with a four pin connector.
I see from the factory service manual's wiring schematic, that coming out of the IC igniter is another four pin connector with wire colors black, green, red/yellow, and black/yellow going into the connector, then black, green, red, and black/yellow going out.
Black goes to one ignition coil, and green goes to the other ignition coil. The red, goes to both coils.
Downstream, there is a three pin connector with red, green, and black going to the EFI circuit.
I'm assuming that to eliminate the old IC igniter, that I'd splice/connect the two wires from the Dyna 3 module (that were instructed to be connected "where the original points connected") to the green and black wires either at the dangling (IC igniter now removed) empty IC igniter's four pin connector on the harness, or to (splice) the green and black wires at the three pin connector that goes to the EFI circuit? From viewing the schematic, it looks like it doesn't matter, but connecting at the dangling four pin connector, looks like the way to go, since I wouldn't be splicing into wires that are in use, just connecting directly to unused wires at the empty four pin connector.
I cannot "match" the colors as instructed by Dyna 3 installation instructions. One of their wire's color is white, and the other is black, so through process of elimination, I figure the Dyna 3's white wire goes to the Kaw's green. NEW STUFF===> After my original posting, I found that the Dyna 3's white wire has a small piece of black sleeving on it, and the Dyna 3's black wire has a small piece of green sleeving on it. Both pieces of colored sleeving are free to slide up and down the length of their respective wires and had slid down to the module and I didn't see them. So, I assume that the white wire (with black sleeve) goes to the Kaw's black wire, and the Dyna 3's black wire (with green sleeve) goes to the Kaw's green wire.
Has anyone got any experience installing a Dyna 3 ignition on a KZ1100 that came stock with an electronic ignition AND/OR a GPZ 1100 with the EFI too?
Am I on the right track before I go and start snipping the old wires? I feel like I'm about ready to disarm a bomb, one wrong snip and...
Thanks in advance.
Marty
