For reference, here's a link to the combination rectifier/regulator unit listed at Z1 Enterprises.
Using the stock connectors should help avoid concerns about the different wire colors involved.

The box with black/blue/yellow/red and black/green/black/red(maybe yellow) sounds like the ignition module. That is not a regulator/rectifier combo unit, but we would need pictures to be sure.
A reg/rec combo unit will likely have 3 yellows, and probably a black, a white or red, and maybe a brown.
So it sounds like you have an ignition module and no regulator or rectifier then.

I'm not sure that is the right igniter. It should have 8 wires. That one appears to only have 6 wires, and the box doesn't look like the ones I'm familiar with.

Earth to Patton!
Just dawned on me that Kawasaki retained the points ignition system 1973 Z1~1978 KZ1000, and adopted the i.c. igniter style electronic ignition on 1979 KZ1000.
I may be confusing "ignition module" with "i.c. igniter." :S
Dale -- it would be helpful to know exactly what ignition system is currently fitted on the bike (which originally came with a points ignition).
But the points ignition may have been replaced with an electronic ignition such as later model Kawasaki i.c. igniter style electronic ignition, or a Dyna-S electronic ignition, or some other style electronic ignition.
If uncertain about which ignition is currently fitted, remove the points cover (just two screws), and describe for us what is seen. Which might be one of the three versions shown in the following pic. But it might be something else.
Where a Kawasaki i.c. igniter style electronic ignition is used to replace a points system, an i.c. igniter unit is also part of the system. The i.c. igniter does not fit underneath the points cover.
Each system has its own wiring variation.
Good Fortune!
