The ignition and charging system are two separate systems.

The pink/yellow/blue from the alternator stator go to the regulator and also brach off to the rectifier. (The original system had separate reg and rec. If you have a modern combo reg/rec, then the pink/yellow/blue goes to the AC side of the combo unit, and the order of the colors doesn't mater.)

If the ignition is the factory electronic ignition from a later model, then the black/blue/yellow/red are the pickup wires. They go to the IC igniter. The IC igniter then connects to the coils.

Hello, Dale, and WELCOME to KZR! :cheer:

If needed, here's the link to a downloadable on-site wiring diagram (found in Filebase under "KZ Information" in the green ribbon toward top of screen.)

Other KZ900 model wiring diagrams are likely also there.

There is an error on that diagram regarding the coil wires. The black wire goes to the coil firing cylinders 1 and 4, and the green wire goes to the coil firing 2 and 3.

The AC side is what gets connected to the stator. It will likely be 3 yellow wires. They go to the pink, blue, and yellow wires from the stator.

Thanks to loudhvx for noting critical errors in the linked wiring diagram. :cheer:

It's important to remember that the 3 o'clock points (or module or pick-up) grounds and ungrounds whichever ignition coil is firing inside spark plugs #2 and #3, and that the 9 o'clock points (or module or pick-up) grounds and ungrounds whichever ignition coil is firing outside spark plugs #1 and #4.

On double-checking this particular section of wiring diagrams in the FSM:

FSM for 1973 Z1~1976 KZ900-A4 has four separate color wiring diagrams:

900 Z1-A (U.S. model) -- correct -- green from 3 o'clock points to coil firing inside #2/3 plugs, and correct black from 9 o'clock points to coil firing outside #1/4 plugs;

900 Z1-A (European model) -- correct -- same as U.S. model;

KZ900-A4 (US, Canada model) -- incorrect;

Z900-A4 (European model) -- incorrect.

Interestingly, the wiring diagrams in FSM for later models eliminated the spark plug numbers for each pair of plugs, whereby the diagram is technically correct.

Good Fortune! :)

That's one way to keep things straight. :laugh:

Thanks for verifying. :)

thanks for all the help maybe im in over my head there seems to be no 3yellow wires anywhere and was told the regulator rectifier is one unit so i locateded that and there is only red black yellow and blue comimg out of that but the colors are not the same as the pink lightblue and yellow coming out of the stater the othe side of the reg/rec goes to the coils and has the red black and green wires on it so i still dont know where the pink blue and yellow go

Don't know if this will help, but where not already known, basic understanding of the bike's electrical system may aid trouble shooting.

As loudhvx noted, The ignition and charging system are two separate systems.
That's important to realize and keep in mind.

The charging system's purpose in life is to keep the battery charged. Other parts of the bike's electrical system depend on voltage supplied from the battery.

With a good charged battery, and no charging system components whatever, the engine should run just fine using only the ignition system, until the battery runs down.

The alternator (dynamo) generates AC (alternating current) which goes to the rectifier which converts the AC to DC (direct current).

The DC from the rectifier goes to the regulator which maintains correct DC voltage for keeping the battery charged.

Here's a simple method to check performance of the charging system:
With all the electrics hooked up, and a good fully charged battery, engine running --- use a voltmeter to measure voltage across the battery terminals. At idle rpm, look for about 13 volts. At 3000~4000 rpm, look for 14~15 volts.

Too low voltage across the battery terminals indicates a rectifier issue (and/or an alternator issue).
Too high voltage across the battery terminals indicates a regulator issue.

Good Fortune! :)
