sounds like we have come up with the exact same solution. i am still pondering if i will keep the stock tack since it will be of no use. but it will keep the original appearance, which i like. but if i only had 1 gauge (centered), i think it would still look better if it was in the original kz cup.

Maybe you could similarly hollow out the tack. Seal it and the cable housing, and remove the flex shaft from the cable. Then it could fill up with oil, and act as KZ Lava Lamp. :P

sounds like a great idea

but i was thinking more along the lines of a temp or 02 gauge. :)

Oddly enough, this same topic came up simultaneously in my build thread, and not of my doing. Nelson suggested, fitting a GPS or bicycle speedometer. The bicycle speedos are something I am quite familiar with. I even have one with a built in heart rate monitor. It would be interesting how many rpms the old ticker gains after a wheelie. :woohoo:

Some of the bike speedos have a backlight, but it is usually momentary to preserve batteries. They do have speed, odometer, trip odo, average speed, max speed, and some even have altimeters. Garmin actually builds a speedo/GPS unit that has some very interesting features.

Probably not the direction that I will go, but interesting options none the less.

I'm thinking along the lines of Acewell or other on the left gauge, and GPS on the right side. Time will tell. I'm afraid that adding a O2 monitor would cause me to become obsessive compulsive about my jetting/tuning. I wouldn't want that. Off to wash my hands for the 35th time since dinner.

I could not find the dimensions on this particular unit, but it was something that irishwill had mentioned to me. It is a nice looking stepper motor driven analog speedo display. He had planned on fitting this gauge in the stock housing like you'd like to do. If you need to fit a flange on the inside of the stock housing, let me know.

They also have matching electronic tachs. The price looks STEEP though

Here ya go....

Larry was thinking about the gutted cup as well back when... Might want to pm him on it for what he came across....;)

If need be, I can get some caliper dimensions on mine for ya... Let me know what you need....;)

EDIT: follow the link for dimensions.... 70mm x 60mm
NOTE: Acewell also makes a panel mount version that may suit your cup needs better....

Thanks guys. I think that the one I am looking at is a panel mount. It listed 64mm diameter x 41mm long IIRC. Seems like it would fit.

I have an Acewell question for those that have installed one. I am making a complete harness for my 650 and I need to know what wiring requirements these gauges have. Thanks. I assume it's coil feed, 12V and ground?

My son Alex just bought an Acewell 2853 to mount on his KZ750 L3. Looks like he will be doing the same changeout a OnkelB just did.
Problem is that we are both noobs to electrical work so we may have some really dumb questions for you guys.

When I say dumb questions, I mean very basic electrical stuff. Please be patient, we will try to provide pics as we go.

He purchased the unit through Baja Designs located in San Marcos Ca. They say to allow 10 business days but shipped the unit within 3 business days.

Thanks for the input.

It seems that there are a few Acewell owners here. I'm sure that collectively we can set you straight. Where are you going to post the photos? New thread, or in this one? BTW, I don't mind if you post them here. Hijack if you like. :)
