Speedo and tach wigging out at high speeds

27 Sep 2010 09:14

My tach and speedo do fine until i'm going around 70. Then they both begin to give outrageous readings of constant fluctuations. It's really annoying because I can't tell what RPM i'm at after around 6-7. They just start wigging out. Anyone know what could be wrong? Thanks a bunch

"Wigging out"

We used to use that expression for a meth addict that lived on our street!

Anyways... They're wiggin cause thery're old. The magnets/mechanicals inside have worn past the point of being able to properly report to the needle.

These guys are yourbest option for help/repair: Z RESTO

Cheers!

If mechanical meters, might help to clean and lube cables.

Good Fortune! :)

if you have ever just added washers to tighten up the mounts remove them and replace the foam cushion between the mount and the gauges

That sounds like a great idea! I'll have to try that the next time I'm wrenching on mine. My guages flake out at speed too.

Probably a harmonic vibration causing the needles to read really wrong. Change the old, hardened, rubber dampners first before send the instruments off for repair.

I fixed the loose mounts in my Z1 guages using some rubber washers from a plumbing repair kit. One of those universal type kits from Lowes.

When I bought the beast 8 years ago the speedo would go crazy when it hit 40kph. I unscrewed the cable, undid the brackets etc and took it off. I shook it and it rattled. OK I thought, there's something rolling around in here. I cut the chrome ring which holds both halves of the speedo together. I opened her up and there was a little 12V bulb holder - did I mention the speedo lights did not work ? - rolling around and messing with the inner workings. I put the holder where it should be. I put the 2 speedo halves together and put the chrome ring back using PC7 Epoxy. I got new bulbs and everything is good since.
