650 / Z1 elec starter hole was created by Beard
i have a 79 kz650, im removing the electric starter.
APE sells a starter hole plug.
kzzone.com/starterplates.html
usually all their stuff is Z1 based.
Does anyone know if the z1 and kz650 have similar starter hole size?
Has only every used a freeze plug instead?
Also if anyone has already done this. What did you come up for attaching the chrome starter cover once the connection point (the starter) is gone.
Thanks

I thought the 650 starter was used in other models, but a search shows only these share the same starter:
Model (13):
KZ650-B1 (1977)
KZ650-B2 (1978)
KZ650-B2A (1978)
KZ650-B3 (1979)
KZ650-C1 (Custom) (1977)
KZ650-C2 (Custom) (1978)
KZ650-C3 (Custom) (1979)
KZ650-D1 (SR) (1978)
KZ650-D1A (SR) (1978)
KZ650-D2 (SR) (1979)
KZ650-E1 (LTD) (1980)
KZ650-F1 (1980)
KZ650-H1 (CSR) (1981)
Could have someone with a loose 1000 starter measure the size and compare with a 650 starter.

the nose on the 650 and 750 is quite a bit bigger than the 900, 1000, and 1100's you'll have to make your own.

Automobile freeze plugs might fit to fill the hole, as for the cover, you'll have to fabricate something.

Make the plug 1.87" dia x .50" thick with a small lip on the outer edge... silicone in with copper coat - you can also use this as a crank breather spot (excellent location)
Mine has never moved in over 15 years of use...
Not sure about the cover... you don't need it... if any rain gets in there it will drain out - no worries, its just extra weight anyways.

My friend has these for years. They come in various sizes.
.
Once the starter is out and the hole is sealed, it's a perfect place to keep a burrito warm.

Hi Beard,
Sorry to drag this out of the archive, but the guys over at KZ650.info pointed me to this thread...
I'm doing the same mod to my KZ650 and was wondering what you ended up doing to plug the starter motor hole?
Did you use something off the shelf or did you end up fabricating a plug?
Thanks in advance!

sbrunton bothering me over on dtt too..
i do not have a concrete solution as of yet.. because i am fickle.
but i will give the 3 ideas i am leaning towards.. maybe a combo of all 3 ill end up with..
1 (loudhvx above) offered a rubber compressable plug.. can get those at auto parts stores...
2. z1enterprises is showing this plug when i search via my bike model.. it is the vented one... APE does sell a non vented one, but they were unable to tell me if it would fit
www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=3961
vents are good.. easy enough to run.. but not having it in my hands.. im unsure of how well it would stay in.
3. i wanted to keep the mounting holes for the starter cover. so i came up with this so far.
i gutted the starter..leaving just the end caps.. then i put proper length tubing over the long bolts.. (heck i cut flux brush tubes for mine) the outside cap gets bolted, as long as your bolt sleeves are proper length they will force the inside cap to def stay in place.. u can still mount the starter cover using factory bolts..
i may use the rubber plug thing in solution 1
i may modify the end cap or cap from solution 2.
may try to use the starter compartment for tool or burrito storage.
