Possible Charging issues?
06 Sep 2010 08:35
As some of you know I recently rebuilt my kz1000. Since then I have had a whole host of qwirks (detailed in engine break in concerns) Now I have electrical demons so I thought I would start a new post here.
1. First I have had no issues up until recently. My battery got a bad cell in it so I replaced it.
2. Next my dyna s died so I replaced it.
3. I cleaned and sealed all my connections tight
4. I performed the test to see if I had a battery drain.
5. I tested the battery after a charge (12V, low?)
6. Warmed up the bike battery tested at (11.40v)
7. rev the motor to 4k no change in voltage
8. let the bike run for 15 min tested batter (11.2v)
sounds like the alternator is not doing its job.

My 76 KZ900 and early KZ1000 are pretty much identical in the electrical charging system...
Follow this post, has the excerpts from my manual to measure the Dynamo, rectifier and regulator circuits....
Also insure your regulator is ideally grounded...
As I just went through recently, lost a Diode bank in the Rectifier, pretty much same symptom....

I just put the charger on my battery and only after 1 hr on the 2A setting it registered full. I tested it and the voltage is only 12.65V. Is it not supposed to be 14.5V?
