Charging problem...still was created by 2bskor
My regulator was replaced (the ground wire was melted??) with another good regulator still no charge. I took the stator out looked it over and found a broken wire in one of the copper windings that went from one winding to another, so I solder it and tried that but after driving the bike the battery continues to go down in voltage.

The funny thing is if I try to get a reading from my multimeter across the battery I can't get a reading because the display jumps all over the place, so I tried a new meter and the same thing happens, but only when the engine is running ?????? Any ideas.

Sounds like a lot of AC ripple, used R/R bad, leaking diodes.

Usually if the ground wire is melted, that means something shorted. Have you checked all of the ground wires going back to the battery?

As far as the meter jumping around, do you have solid core wires with no-resistor plugs or caps? That can cause meters to go crazy.

Try an analog meter. They are not as susceptible to the RF noise.

Very good point. Took the resistor caps off when I did the coil mod and put new dyna coils on. I traced the ground wire back as far as the junction where all of the ground wires branch from and replaced the ground wire to the regulator with a new one. Everything from the junction on looks good.

There is deffinately something to be said for new replacement parts. I've only had about 50% success with Fleabay and other used crap. It eith works just ok cause someone beat it good, then dies on you a year later, or just doesnt work right when you get it.

A new stator and new R/R unit with all new wiring is PRICELESS, works flawlessly, and pays for itself in the end.

Just save the dough, and buy new. It all works sooo much better than the old crap!

+ no headaches!

checthe yellow leads with r/r unpluged they should be putting out 50v AC, then you can precede, have you ohm metered the r/r? to make sure it will pass if it was used?

If you can spring for it that is great! in fact if you are buying new get a stator off the G1 it is at least 50% larger from the factory, this was on the injected bike and they wanted to make sure the DFI was fed steady power.
