non start
29 Aug 2010 12:26
Hello all, I've just become a member of your forum and I would really appreciate any advice you can send my way. I have owned 2 stroke dirt bikes for the last 35 years but have slowed down to dodging cars and not trees. I have a 78 kawi 650 and it will not start on a warm to hot days, but when it runs all else works fine until I try to re-start the bike. I have good spark and compresion and fuel delivery is O.K.,filters are clear and I use high octane gas. I have kicked my leg off until I take the car to work, a real drag. If anyone has any input, good or bad would you please submit any thoughts. Thanks, Dave

Have you checked your points, ignition. My 77 650 gave me fits with cold starts and it was ignition related

have you checked the compression and valve clearances?
Still recovering, some days are better than others.

I'd dump the high octane fuel just on general principle.
I have noticed on my '79 KZ650 that if the choke is even slightly engaged, the bike will not start warm, but it will run all day at part choke if I forget to turn it off all the way. I never kick start my bike. The one or two revs on the engine it takes to start it with the start button is just fine for me.
I don't know what you've done to ensure "good spark and compression and fuel delivery" but I'm pretty sure it isn't a blown tail light. Just kidding
. Don't assume any of those are good if the bike doesn't run.
Worn out coils, maladjusted points, vacuum leaks, low battery voltage at the coils, overly rich fuel delivery, stuck choke, valve clearance (added because Plummen is incredibly smart), etc. can all cause the problem you describe.

If you're still using the original sparkplug caps and wires,I suggest replacing them as heat and age will cause them to become intermittent.
7mm from the local hot rod shop will fit the coils and caps or go to www.z1enterprises.com and order non resistive Dyna sparkplug wires.
