putting gpz 1100 coils on a 78 z1r,does the wires coming from the points go to the negative sides of the coils?

They can if you want, although it makes absolutely no difference.
You may want to check the primary resistance on those coils if you're connecting them to points. The GPz1100 has electronic ignition. You need coils with at least 4 ohm primary resistance, or a ballast resister, if you have points.

The 78 Z1R used a 3 Ohm system. The Gpz1100 had a 2.2 Ohm system. If you run the GPZ coils with the ballast resistor you will have a very small spark. If you run them without the resistor you will arc out your points.

Ok Thanks for the advise. A friend of mine needed one coil, for his restoration project Z1R, and I offered my OEM coils to him. He gave them back and will find another. Again thanks for responces.
