How to troubleshoot sparks on a "newer" KZ

I'm trying to track down an issue with my '93 KZP1000 not starting. The joker I bought it from did some creative wiring to "fix" a short in the engine kill switch that I'm trying to unfix.

I've traced the problem through the ignition, kill switch (needed cleaning, nothing else), etc. Everything looks good but it won't start.

How do I go about checking spark? Pull a plug and hold it against the block while cranking the engine? If there is no spark what do I check next?

pulling a plug out and holding against the block works. does your bike have a clutch switch and a side stand switch you may have a problem with those also check the easiest stuff first check you fuses.
