Electric Tach Drive? was created by bgcarl01
I don't know if this picture posted correctly, I'll try again if not. I have what looks like a mechanical drive on my motor for the tach, but my tach is electrical. Either way, the tach doesn't work and the drive leaks. What goes here?

Could I have a different motor in my bike than what was orginally there? The thing came from a bike boneyard.

Okay, so that may have been a farmer move on the old laptop, but since I couldn't get my picture in my post, it's now my avatar.

That's the output drive for a mechanical tach. What model bike do you have and what size motor?

I thought so. Supposedly it's a 1981 KZ1000 LTD. The Tach is definately electrical. It works sometimes, which a lot of other posts on here talk about. It's possible that it's a 1000 from another genre though. That's why I was so boggled about that drive! I'm sure it's a not a 750 swapped in there, as a friend drives a 82 KZ750 Spectre, and judging by the way i can just pull away from him.....I'll see if I can't get a full picture of the bike up for you.

Judging by the picture you posted (which is a bit too small) The engine looks like a MKII motor which is an earlier motor than an 81. The color matches an 81, but an 81 should have a "J" series motor which would not have a provision for a kick starter. There was no LTD in 1979/80 with the exception of the fuel injected Z1 'Classic" in 79 and that bike looks completely different. The simplest way to tell what motor you have is by the serial # on it, but for sure it looks like a 79/80 MKII motor. How about a better picture of the right side of the engine.

Fore some reason Kawasaki is very screwed up on their LTD1000 bikes in their ID manuals from 1977-1980. They end with 1977 and do not pick up until 81 for the LTD1000. But the MKII motor LTDs have the old stile frame. The bike in the picture is a "J" series frame, but with a MKII motor.

Motor says: KZTOCAE096028, Which matches nothing on the frame vin by the way. I guess this won't a be restore project huh? Okay, so what's the best product for eliminating that drive. I saw some different things on here already, including a plug for the hole from Z1?

If KZTOCAE096028 is actually KZTOOAE096028,
engine is perhaps from a 1980 KZ1000-B4 LTD.

See info from Zedder, below.

What's VIN on frame?

Usually located in a white applique on right hand side of steering neck, or found in the ownership papers.

Good Fortune! :)
