Z1 Rectifier/Regulator Combo Unit Test Results....
09 Aug 2010 18:56
As some of you may have read, I recently lost a diode bank in my KZ900 rectifier unit.... Luckily, my KZ1000 unit is the same part number so in it went....
The bike started and ran just fine but in my measurements found that the highest DC voltage obtainable was 13.7Vdc (no lights) @ 4Krpm....
Spec is 14 - 14.5Vdc @ 4Krpm...
With the regulator being terminated to the same inputs, good chance it took a hit as well... Also had to keep in mind it was 30 years old after all....
No problem then.... Contacted Jeff @ Z1 and placed my order.... I replaced it with a combo rect/reg unit...
Fairly easy to install and I say that for I had fabbed up my own plate in my mod so the attached bolts weren't long enough... So break off, drill out insert longer bolts, no big deal...
The electrical termination is extremely easy, even Plummen could do it.... The supplied green connector get's inserted into the electrical panel green connector, the bullet white conductor goes to the same termination point as the old rectifier did and the ground, well goes to the battery or frame... I soldered a #16AWG conductor extension and crimped a round terminal ring on the end to attach to a solid grounding point under my seat....
To make a long story short, gained 1 Vdc to my entire electrical system and more importantly for performance, to my coils/sparkies! That translates into over 10% increase off a +12Vdc power source :woohoo: to my entire system (charging, lighting & coil/spark plugs)
At idle, 13.8/9Vdc
At 3000 rpm, 14.2/3Vdc
At 4Krpm (+) up 14.7Vdc where it maxed out regardless of rpm.
With lights on, 14.5Vdc at 4Krpm....
All in all... Well worth the money in my book!
Thanks Jeff/Z1!!!!
Almost forgot... While I was at it.... $17 @ Checkers auto parts... Sunpro Vdc meter with 7 LED selection of colors.... Compared to DVM, spot on....

Any chance of a side shot? I'm curious how deep the gauge is.
