speedo wrong?

According to the guide at Z1 I have the correct speedo for my year model and I'm pretty sure my front wheel is the right size but my speedo shows I am going faster than I am,ie. shows40 at about35, or shows 90 at 70. Any suggestions.BTW I have a 76 KZ900A4

Did you change tire sizes? I'd think this would affect the speedo more than anything else.

With that much difference there is something els going on. Either you switched from the stock 19" front to an 18" or the spedo is the wrong one or the spedo drive is the wrong one. That is a 33% discrepancy.

Mine is farther out than that even, these old speedo mechs loosen up/wear out/go out of spec. There is a guy around who'll rebuild them incl nice new faces etc for a price

Edit: if you don't feel like paying the $300-400 for a rebuild, you can just buy a bicycle speedo, or something similar. I have one on my Z1, only maybe $30. The only problem is that it only reads up to 75.

If you discover that the problem is with the speedo, Z1Resto restores meters from the earlier KZs... 1970s models & maybe some 1980 models (but nothing after 1980). Z1Enterprises.com has a link & other info. The last time I checked the price was in the $100 range.

Just got my speedo and tach back from Z resto. Mine used to jump up and down. Awesome job and he calibrates them . Cost me $95 for the speedo and $110 for the tach.(it needed a new crimp ring)

If you feel everything is correct for the bike, but are unsure of the gear ratio for the speedo drive. Then changing this may get you much closer to being right. But you need to figure your ratio now, then a figure for the percentage your off, and then figure a correcting ratio. Then is that available, or something close, that fits your fork/ wheel.
