Can anyone verify this or tell me how to verify if I can swap my 550 coils to my 750? My 750 has a cracked coil (its still working) but I don't trust it. Money is short right now and the 550 is layed up, so I was hoping I could just use the 550 coils for the rest of the riding season.
Thanks.

Measure all the coils you have and see what they Ohm out at. They should all measure between 2.0 and 2.4 Ohms. If so than they are interchangeable. If two of them are closer to 3 Ohms than they are not interchangeable.

I'm using a set of Accel coils #140403 on my 80 750H.They bolted right up to the stock "A" coil brackets.I had to fabricate the pigtails to hook the coils to the harness, but no big deal. And the yellow Accel wires look really cool, too. The tank slid back on without any real trouble too.got the coils off E-bay for $50.

Yes those will work. They are 3 Ohm coils so you will loose some energy. But because they are higher output voltage than the stock coil they will bring you down to stock output voltage. If the proper 2.2 Ohm coils are used the output voltage is 37% higher. Accel at this time makes no 2.2 Ohm coils. The Dyna gray coils however are 2.2 ohms and are designed specifically for these Kawasaki ignitions. The Accel coils work the best with the Dyna-3 or Dyna-S ignitions.

Yes, same coils, but wires may be different length. You'll have to try them and see if they stretch far enough. They both use the 2.3 ohm coil system. The 2.2 ohm coils would be better matched than the 3 ohm coils, but I use the 3 ohm Accels and they work fine for me. If I had to buy them new, I'd probably get the 2.2 ohm Dynas, though.

If you want to confirm them, they should all measure in the 2.3 to 2.6 ohm range. With age they vary more, and tend to go higher in resistance more often.

I think, back in the day, kaw may have used different coils only because the right ones were not available, but this is just a guess. I believe the dwell is the same for the older electronic system, so that would indicate the coils should have been the same. Dwell and coils should be the determining match. Other considerations such as current limit in the igniter and availability of parts are really just obstacles requiring compromise.

There is also an interesting thing to note about spark energy in the two types of coils (Accel 3 vs KZ 2.3). When the motor is idling, the Accel actually stores more energy theoretically, based on inductance and resistance measurements. At higher RPMs, the KZ coil ends up storing more energy. So it really is about matching the dwell to the coil or vice versa.

If a bike was having idling issues, the Accel may actually help it out, as long as the redline performance was rock solid. Usually, though, it is the higher RPM performance that is of concern.
