Broken battery post!?

Broken battery post!? was created by polkat
My new battery (12 AA) snapped off the positive battery post when I stupidly used a bolt that was a bit too long. Dang! It's a good battery too.

Well, in the past I have drilled the bigger posts in car batteries down the center, and screwed in a stud. But the terminals on these bike batteries are flat, and small! Don't see doing the stud thing as the lead doesn't go deep enough into the case.

Any ideas for a fix, or is it now junk?

I've soldered them back on before. Just use non-flux solder and a mid sized iron (obviously not a torch lol) ,work slowly and it will be strong enough if you are careful when tightening the bolt.

Well, my camera's battery is dead, but here's a quick drawing of the positive post. The drawing is a bit exagerated, but you'll get the idea..............

Get a pure copper bolt and nut. Cut the head off the bolt. Straighten up the threads on the bolt where it was cut so the nut screws on easy. Clean bolt and nut and terminal with a brass brush. Then clean with acid flux. Put copper stud into terminal with copper nut in place of original battery nut. Screw in stud flush with nut. Put stainless nut on front side of stud to keep solder off of threads. Then solder the whole works, but try to keep the threads of the stud clean. If you're good or lucky, the stainless nut should come off and you'll have a battery post with a stud.

I've never done this, and there are several problems I can see. I'd really like some opinions on the likelihood of this working before you try it.

Hopefully someone can come up with something simpler.

It's not a bad idea. I used to solder copper water pipe with a smaller propane torch in one of my past jobs. Is this the kind of soldering gear/heat we are talking about? And I suppose watching out for melting the plastic case is necessary?

Yeah, not really usre how to do it. Plastic will want to melt first and it will be a mess. I think this idea won't work. Any heat source to heat the terminal will melt the plastic too, even with adequate shielding from heat.

"Bite the bullet and buy a new battery. "....

No Doubt...

How old is this battery to start with 1-2 years?

Your going to drive around trying to find all this crap or order on line (shipping charges) etc...
Not mention possibly get stranded somewhere when this thing goes to crap....

With all your other electrical posting issues, why go this route... :S All this for what, a $30 battery. Seriously, doesn't make sense...
