Mounting aftermarket headlights
04 Jul 2010 17:35 - 04 Jul 2010 17:38
I want to get a bigger headlight for my kz440. I like the look of the bigger chrome headlights with visors. I've looked online and I see a lot of headlights I light but I'm not sure how to mount them since I'm new to this motorcycle thing. I doubt they will just bolt right on even thought some say fits any metric bike... Won't I need some sort of custom bracket?
This is the headlight in question:

Thanks for helping out a bike newbie.

is a 900/1000 headlight any bigger than your stock light?

AnxiousCowboy,
The stock headlight on the KZ 440 is a 6" diameter (KZ550 - 1300 headlights are 7" diameter) and headlight housing (bucket) are side mounted to the front end. There are a bunch of wire connections from the main harness and handle bar controls inside the headlight bucket behind the headlamp assembly.
If you have never had the headlight out of the bucket, remove the headlamp assembly (chrome ring and light holder)using the two screws on the sides below the mounting bolts. The top of the chrome ring is held by a tab.
Pull out on the bottom of the lamp assemdly and push down on the top of the chrome ring to release the tab. The buckets are plastic and the tab will break off if the top of the ring is forced straight out (ie: forced with a screwdriver).
This will show you what you are up against as far as the wire connections are concerned.
Using the style headlight in the link, a mounting bracket to attach the light would need to be fabricated and the connections that are normally protected in the headlamp bucket would need to be re-routed/protected some where.
Not a bolt on swap but also not impossible.
Good luck,
Jim

Your electrical system is designed to run a high beam of about 55W. Not sure about the H4 bulbs that this thing takes.
