Looks like a cool project.
But isn't that what your tach is for, to low of RPM, downshift, to high upshift. You are either in the right gear or the wrong, personally I have yet to need a electric device displaying gears. And yes I drive manual transmissions in my vehicles as well. I would rather the TACH.

I definitely see a use for it. My gearing is so high that sometimes I'm in 4th and not in 5th. I know that i have to down shift down to second for best take off power. This will allow me to go down more than one gear safely without down-shifting too low. I have done that plenty enough. For vigorous riding that requires skipping gears sometimes it is fantastic. I'm definitely going to build one. You can buy them finished from a few companies for $250-$350.

I love it! Thanks KZ.chris. Maybe not for the KZ, but I got one I can use it for.

Seems like it could lose track of the gear if there is a shift into a false neutral, or if you don't fully shift. It's only sensing shifter up and down movement. Apparently it uses a signal from the neutral switch to "reset" it's position.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. Still, it looks like an interesting project, and I might want to give it a try--just for the fun of it.
