I have a kz750 igniter on my bike right now, however, my bike is a kz550. Is this a proper substitute or should I not do this?

Pretty well all the Ma Kaw igniters are interchangeable. At one time I had an ignition plate off a kz550, an igniter off a kz1000, and coils off a kz750 electronic ignition on one of my kz650s.

The ignition plate on the kz1000 is slightly different than the smaller bikes, but can be modified to work on the small ones with a dremel and a little time.

You're good.
I remembered loudhvx posted on building s replacement igniter snd the 550 one works on the 750 snd vice versaI double checked on kawasaki.com parts diagrams and yes the same igniter from the 750 is used on the 550, A1 A2 A3 A4 C1 C2 C3 C4 D1 and F1 models.

Try Kawasaki.com parts diagrams and drill down to the part. \Click on the part # and then the little yellow ? mark to see where used

I think the only ones that may not be interchangeable are the electronic-advance ones. If it has a mechanical advancer, they should all be interchangeable. I always like the way Kaw likes to use a lot of interchangeable parts between models.
