I have a 1982 KZ440 and it is getting a new chain and sprockets put on. The guy who is fixing it calleed me and said When the bike wheel is up and he turns on the throttle the speedometer doesn't move, should it?

If he's talking about the rear wheel turning, then no the speedometer won't move. I'm not 100% sure but on most KZ's the speedometer drive is attached to the front wheel. Are you sure he said speedometer and not tachometer?

He said speedometer, so that would make sense if that was what he was doing. He just made it sound like my speedometer was broke and when I took it in the other day it was fine.

Speedo cables do break with time, to see if the cable is broken, disconnect it at the instrument, and turn the front wheel. The cable should turn, if not, first make sure the cable is correctly installed at the front wheel.

I believe the cable has a slot that mates with the drive mechanism on the front hub.

When bike is back in hand, would double-check installation of the new chain and sprockets. ;)

Good Fortune! :)

Many years ago, the bike I've got now needed new front fork seals. I took it to the local dealer when I lived in San Diego Ca.

It was a simple repair, but I always inspect the work before paying. I went out to the bike and noticed gouges in the front forks(both tubes) along with finger tight fasteners.

I got the sevice manager and pointed out my observations,he told me the mechanic(?) doing this job would not get paid for such sloppy work and I would get new fork tubes and be able to pick up the bike the next day.

I picked up the bike the following day with no problems, I sometimes wonder what would have happened had I paid and rode off. Would I have crashed? Could the front end wipe out in a turn?

Always verify repairs not done by yourself.............
