Help!!! was created by eddyshore
So I bought this bike last week 79 KZ650 b2 , the old man who sold it to me said he had it running last year since then it sat . I take it home put in a new battery , change the plugs and nothing . It turns over like champ but wont start. Grab the old spark plug and hook it up and place it against the frame and crank it again . NO SPARK. I have 12v out of the battery that I follow down to 12v at the starter solenoid but then I lose it . I get nothing at the coils, nothing at the stator .....Whats the next step?

Remove the ignition point cover and check the point gap. A business card is pretty close in thickness to get it running. The cover should be on the right side of the engine(about CD sized).

If it were me. I'd look at getting a Dyna electronic ignition as replacing the points and capacitors(condensors for the Brits and our northern neighbors) can be easy to do, but for longevity I; like the electronic systems.

I think I already have and electric ignition on it . Under that cover is a plate with two black plastic C shaped things . I am pretty sure it said DYNA on it too.

Sounds like the previous owner did an ignition up grade. Check a splice that in the past has been troublesome, it's one of those insulation displacement "Suitcase" type.

It works by having the wires get squeezed in a plastic holder with a metal piece piercing the wire insulation.

This type of splice can get moisture in it making for intermittant connection. I'd get some solder and heatshrink tubing for a much better connection.

Get a multimeter and check the input voltage to the coils at the primary(small wires) side with the key on, it should be almost the same as battery voltage.

Have a fully charged good battery as the Kawasaki's will run not so good on a bad battery.

As I said above I have 12.5 at the battery 12.5 at the starter Solenoid , nothing at the coils , I tested the wires from the stator also and have nothing there when I crank the bike . A 20 fuse was blown but I changed that and it did nothing .If could get spark I'm sure the motor would fire right up . Anymore Ideas ?

I'd contact Dyna and ask them how to troubleshoot their system. At www.wgcarbs.com he has a similar forum where electrical questions can be answered about ignition problems.

The stator isn't spinning fast enough to get a voltage there. Check if any of the wires going to anything electrical in the point/rectifier/stator/coil area are grounding out with an ohm meter. Sounds like it getting unplugged at the rectifier so check there carefully.

Imo stator isn't the problem.

With ign ON, supposed to have batt+ voltage from kill switch to coil primaries.

Without any charging components, bike should perform just fine until battery runs down.

Good Fortune! :)

Open up the right handle bar switch pod and look for dead bugs, corrosion, dirty contacts,or broken wires/broken solder joints.

If everything looks good, open up the headlight housing and look for corrosion in the many and various electrical connectors.

Power from main fuse goes to ignition switch. With key turned ON, power goes through kill switch (in RUN position) to coils. Kill switch OFF disallows power to coils.

With ignition switch ON, if battery voltage is getting to the kill switch as it's supposed to, could check for voltage at coils when in RUN position, and no power to coils when in OFF position.

Good Fortune! :)
