79 KZ 750B coil?
05 Jun 2010 14:46
Don't know where to start so I will give this a whirl. After I got the bike, changed gas and it ran, wouldn't take any throttle so I went back through the carbs. After getting it together I went to kick it I got 1 pop through the exhaust and that's it. Brand new "correct" plugs too.
The electrical on this bike is a work of the imagination, it was clearly shorted out somewhere, tons of crimp connections etc, no blinkers only oil light lights up on dash, no starter unless jumped (bad starter clutch) etc...
Back to the problem, we're getting full voltage (13.5) to the coil and points. We are also getting spark at the point gap consistently but not at the plugs, the entry wires into the coil seems that the wires are loose. searched the coil part number and it comes back to some 400 Honda!
So after spending some time searching the correct part number (21121-1174) I am looking at 150.00ish for a new one. Ebay, well I already have an old coil and don't want to be playing with a part that possibly won't work.
So I want a newer/better coil but am pretty strapped for cash at the moment. Looked around here and don't see a used parts forum. Any suggestions?
Also want to replace the points and condenser because It's the right thing to do, and it's pitted. This is as good an angle as any to getting this thing back on the road.
TIA

Make sure to get the EMGO four Ohm coil (OEM type) for $36. I have a '79 KZ750 B4 and that is the correct coil for it. I am running that coil right now.

Thanks very much for the quick help, I will check out the suggestions and go from there. Once I get the new (undamaged) starter clutch I will work on the starter circuit. My shin feels like it is in particles.
So far I believe I have stumbled onto my new 750's forum home.

Oooohhh..... 750 twin starter clutch.
Truly the spawn of Satan.
I already changed mine so I still remember all the pitfalls. The main bolt holding on the flywheel is reversed threads and you can use the rear axle threaded into the flywheel to pull it loose from the shaft once the bolt is out.

I wondered what them threads were for, used a big wheel puller to carefully pop the bond. These reverse spinning engines take a bit of getting used to.

The coil in the link says 3.5" center to center, mine is 100mm or 4 inch ctr to ctr.... the plot thickens.
Edit: You can't beat their prices, I'll drill and tap a new hole lol.

The EMGO coil is a shade shorter so I made a short piece of metal with two holes as a helper bracket. I bolted one hole on the coil into the existing bracket and used the small flat piece with two holes to make it reach to the existing bracket hole. The coil in the link says 3.5" center to center, mine is 100mm or 4 inch ctr to ctr.... the plot thickens.

Thanks Bounty, I read that in another thread earlier and will check that VS drilling and tapping a new hole. I will post another thread regarding the rectifier on this contraption.
