i need to know how to time my bike correctly, with a timing light. should i just follow the procedure in the book and time it the same as the points?

I'd check with Dyna for installation and timing instructions if you don't have the instructions...

It's real easy with a timing light. Hook up your timing light pickup to either plug #1 or 4 and start the engine. The timing light should show the bike timed at the "F" mark for 1-4, add throttle and watch the timing marks advance and the timing should be between the II marks. If not move your pickup for 1-4 on the plate until it's timed correctly. Move your timing light pickup to either cylinder 2 or 3 and do the same thing.
