Replacement plug wires. was created by bhardy501
I am considering replacing my plug wires on my 80 kz1000b. Other day I had cranked it cold and reached down to make sure i had opened the fuel petcock and got bit. The bike was running at the time. I touched it again and nothing. Its the only time it did it but it felt like the bite you get if you grabed the plug wire while running. Lot more than 12 volts. I think maybe my plug wires are breaking down or may have a bad spot that let the power go through the frame and into the path of least resistance, which alwasy tends to be me. It has a skip until warmed up. What type of wires are reccomended and where do I need to get them? I already have a Dyna electronic ignition on the bike. I looked at the Dyne wires on Ebay for 24.99. I also looked at the Dyna coils for 139.00. Is the coils worth getting also?

Yes the coils are worth getting. If you have factory coils the wires are not replacable they are built into the unit. If you get the coils you can use just about any wire you want. I get the accel wires for a V8 and do two of my bikes at the same time

OK, If I change the coils is it just a straight unbolt and bolt in new ones or is there something else I have to have besides the coils and wires?

It is a direct bolt in but you need to put connecters on the wires that you cut from the old coils. It will liven up your dyna ignition to

Am well satisfied with Dyna 3 ohm green coils and Dyna solid core plug wires from Z1E on both Z1 and KZ900.
Dyna coils bolt in the same frame tabs.
Dyna plug wires are already fitted with caps.
Good Fortune! :)

The Dyna green three(3)ohm coils will require a ring style terminal to be crimped on the coil wires for the primary side. Don't loose the supplied screws as they are about 5/16" long and probably not available from the local hardware stores.

I believe the screws are 10-32 size(or 3/16" hole size) and have a slotted head.

The stock Kawasaki ignition coils had male 1/4' wide terminals with matching female terminals. It will be a small matter to cut the old terminals off, strip the wire back about 3/16" and crimp on new RED ring terminals(that's 22-18 gauge wire size terminals).

Get your hands on a good crimping tool, not a hardware store multi tool. www.mcmelectronics.com has a #22-770 ratcheting crimp tool for $18.99

After installing the new terminals, but a dab of silicone RTV compound to prevent vibration loosening.

Whats the difference between the blue and the green coil, they both are 3 ohm? Also what is the difference between running the copper core and the supression core wires?

If the coils ohm test at 3 ohms, I see no problem, but make sure they are for a motorcycle as car coils are built with different dwell imes.

The surpression spark plug wires/high tension leads are designed to reduce the Radio Frequency Interferrence(RFI) when the sparkplugs fire(the snap and pop heard on radio's and T.V.'s

For greater spark energy, go with copper sparkplug wires and no sparkplug caps with built in resistors.

I think www.z1enterprises.com sells both copper wires and resistorless plug caps.
