Headlight adjustment was created by ed spangler
Hello
We are doing a restoration on a 75 Z1 900, in a few dyas we have to install ( And adjust)A NEW HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY.The old parts are missing and installing all brand new parts,so not even a bolt mark to guess at the correct Headlight adjustment. Can anyone suggest perhaps a method of placing a paper maybe with a line to match up...( ??) on a wall at a certain height and placing the bike a certain distance from the wall etc.?
Thanks For your help!!

If I remember correctly the beam from the 6 volt headlight on my old BSA wouldn't reach the wall from 25'

I just take it out on a straight level road at night with a couple of wrenches.

Probably don't even need to take wrenches with you. If the Z1 has the brace at the bottom of the shell just loosen it and go for a ride. The two rubber side mounts hold the light wherever you adjust it up/down as you ride. Get it set where you get your best light at both high/low beams, go home and tighten your brace. It may not even have the brace, some models do, some don't.
I went through this "wall" thing on my truck last year. After I hit that iddiot woman and smashed my beloved truck, they fix my front end but my headlights are not whithin 1% of being set correctly. You can read 100 different ways and measurements using the wall as reference or get a $1000 headlight aimer. A guy used his aimer on my truck and still not 1% correct. In the end the old fashioned drive and adjust did by far the best of any method.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

FSM says that on high beam, the brightest part of the light should be just below horizontal. While sitting on the bike with high beam on, have a partner measure from the ground to the center of the headlight, then measure on the wall from the floor to the brightest spot. The spot should be at or just a smidgen below the first measurement. This should get you in the hunt. Take a ride to fine tune.
