voltage fluctuation on 1981 CSR 1000 was created by 1981jmotor
Hey Riders, when my bike is idling, there is a noticeable voltage fluctuation of my lights. Also, I know I may need to adjust it, but my horn will not blow at idle.
My bike has been out in the weather some in its 29 years.
Is the fluctuation normal as the regulator and alternator are not steady voltage supplies at idle?
I have a real strong battery. If there are weak connections somewhere, could that cause the horn issue /voltage fluctuation? Like maybe some of the fuses and holders need to be cleaned?

Bought a brand new Honda CM400T at 16 years old in 1979.

I would always see headlight flicker at idle on my old plymouth. You will see some AC ripple at low RPM. I think as long as you have a steady 14V when the revs go above about 3K, your reg is probably working OK.

But maybe not strong enough. :)

Would have battery load tested.

Could test by jumping to known good car battery (car engine NOT running). Try sounding bike horn with bike engine not running (ignition switch in ON position) and again at idle.
If bike horn blows at idle with jump, but doesn't blow absent jump, the bike battery likely isn't up to snuff for whatever reason. Would check fluid levels and specific gravity (with little floating balls eye-dropper gadget), and re-charge.

Good Fortune! :)

 What ignition is fitted? Stock with igniter? Dyna-S? Other?

Dyna-S is known to consume more power than oem ignition, especially at idle.

Good Fortune! :)
