I would try this:

1) Look really close at the plate and see if you can detect the wear marks in the plate surface from where the "hold" screws crank down against it.

2) If not #1, set the plate with the screws midway in the elongated slots. Should be close enough to start.

The 1976 KZ900 and early KZ1000 would be very similar... I believe anyways...

Anyhoot, this was the image I took on my KZ900 pre Dyna ignition installation... The bike would start but I didn't do much other than that for I wanted EI from the get go....

Maybe helps, maybe not....

Ok.......... Could have mentioned that little tid bit of info as well....

Ok, is it a Dyna Ignition?

Considering EI then no brainer.... Set theplate where 3 mounting screws are half way between moon shaped slots....

Then in timing light, idle ~ 800-1000 OEM spec but possibly 1000-1300 on yours.... for "F" mark alignment.... Rev throttle and hold at 2500 rpm for Advance Mark alignment...

Bottom line, if you had the pickups/sensors aligned already, then you should just have to rotate the plate for F/T & Advance marks...

In theory anyways without knowing all that was being accomplished where the plate required removal.... With that said, may want to go through the Static alignments first just to insure all is good...
