77 650b Headlight upgrades!
30 Apr 2010 22:45
I have been reading some threads here and I need help finding the easiest, brightest and cheapest solution to the dim original, kz headlight, without any major electrical, or structural mods. Can anyone help?

Sealed beams dim over time. I think it may due to loss of material on the filament. Try a new sealed beam or car halogen head lamp. If you use a standard 50/55w halogen bulb, the draw will not be a problem.
There are ( supposedly ) motorcycle specific halogen head lamps available, but I'm not sure that they really are different from the ones for cars.

Thanks for the reply,
Will I need a mod for the halogen lamp?

Nope. I just removed my original light and installed an automotive sealed beam halogen light ($11.00) and it's a lot brighter. Plug and play baby! :woohoo:

Have to ask the stupid question of the day...
As Blue and others mentioned, Newer technology bulb no doubt...
Measured voltage at the bulb +12Vdc, good ground... No need to reply, just something to think about as well...

I believe you can get a sealed beam headlamp from the auto parts store - find one that has the same hi/lo wattage w the matching prongs - the halogen unit will give brighter light than the stock headlamp. You could check the Sylvania or Phillips websites to see what might work.
Alternatively, Candlepower.com is another place to try.
They have the units w the separate bulb, which should make future repairs kinda simple... just replace the bulb.
