ballast resistor[kz650 b3 79] was created by irish mike
hi all -i just ordered my new coils and plug wires from z1-it says that i need to remove the ballast resistor from the the circuit-at the risk of sounding stupid -where and what is this -looked in my clymers and on the bike -no luck -i guess it would help if i knew what i was looking for-i will be changing to an electronic ignition soon so theese are the dyna tec coils that zi recomended -just dont know what this ballast resistor is thanks in advance ,,,,mike....

First of all, we would have to know which coils you ordered. Than IF you have a ballast resistor it would be shown in the schematic diagram of your manual. Some bikes had them and some did not. In your manual it will say what your primary and secondary resistance is on the stock coils. The Primary resistance is the one you are concerned with. Than this resistance has to match the resistance of your new coils. The alternative being, replacement your points with a Dynatech electronic ignition. If your bike came with factory electronic ignition than the coils have to have 2.2 Ohm primary resistance. If they are Dyna coils they would be gray.

I took a look at the schematic for your bike, and found that it has NO ballast resistor. What coils did you buy?

thanks again no wonder i couldnt find it-i talked with chris a z1 -he recomended the dc1-1-3.0 coils said that theese were not optimum but would give me the option of changing to the electronic ignition when i have enough cash -said only bad result would be that the points would burn out faster thanks again mike

Actually the points will last longer because of the higher resistance of the 3Ohm coils. Yes that is a big advantage of the 3Ohm coils is the electronic ignition option. The disadvantage at this point is that your spark MAY be a little weaker, but I doubt it because on the other hand the secondary resistance is also higher and that actually raises the potential voltage. So you will most likely be about even at this point. The shorter points life would be true if you DID have a ballast resistor and you removed it. The Dyna "S" ignition would be one of the best investments you could make for that bike. It would give you a little more power and also improve your fuel efficiency. It would also be a one time installation and you would never have to touch it again.

Points had 4 ohm coils. 3 ohm coils will work, but the points will wear faster. Chris at Z1 was correct.

3-ohm are also suited to the Dyna S or Dyna III ignition which is the most likely electronic ignition you would get.

3-ohm also work fine with kawasaki factory electronic ignition if the motor is basically stock. But here, a 2.2 to 2.5 ohm coil would be more ideal.
