'81 KZ1000 -trying to wire aftermarket LH controls
21 Apr 2010 02:21 - 21 Apr 2010 02:43
Hi, I'm trying to wire in an aftermarket LH control and found I'm a little out of my depth. The problem is the turn and dimmer have more wires involved on the harness side than I've got to connect from the new controls. The horn is a no brainer (2 wires) also the new control doesn't have a hazard switch. Here's an image of the wiring for the new controls -I included the wiring diagram for my harness at the top.
Also, I'm not sure what to do w/ the "N" (as opposed to L or R) setting for the turn signals or how to bypass my clutch switch so it'll start. Any help would be appreciated.

The issue with the headlight dimmer is that your bike has a reserve lighting unit which senses a burned out bulb and automatically switches to the other filament. To use your new control, you will defeat this feature.
On the flashers: Your bike has a hazard flasher option where all 4 flash at once. It's done in the turn signal control unit. In order to use your new control, you will defeat this feature also.
In order to make it work will simply require jumping some of the harness wires permanently (maybe cutting some?). It's not hard to do, but you will lose those extra features. If you want to do that I could look through the diagram and figure out what wires to jump or cut.

I don't mind losing the reserve lighting feature or the hazards. I knew I'd lose some features. I probably won't cut any wires... I'm planning on removing the unneeded terminals from the plastic connectors on the harness. And thanks for responding.
