defect new battery? was created by Marp68
Hi

I've bought a new battery (sealed version, non gel). It showed 12.8 volt. The instructions were that if below 12.6 v, charge it, if above it may be installed. So I thought that since it was just above 12.6, I would charge it during the night.

After charging it, I installed it. Five minutes later, when switching on the ignition key, I noticed that the oil lamp and neutral gear lamp glowed very weak. Strange I thought, since I had a new and recently recharged battery. I measured it and it now showed only 10.7 v.

May tha battery be defect from the beginning? But why did it then show more before charging it? Can the electric system have drained the battery in five minutes? I did go for a run with the old battery, but after that I happened to short circuit the old battery while still connected.

I think my charger is okej, since I recharged my old battery recently. It's a simple charger. It is not the model that maintains the charging process.

I will now try charging it during the night, and see what happens.

/Martin

Sounds like you may have burned the battery. What is the amperage of the charger you used? Charging a motorcycle battery on a car battery charger is murder unless you can adjust the charge down to about 1.5 amp. The idea is to charge at about 1.5 amp until the battery reaches 13.5 volts and to only charge it a around 3 hours at a time until it reaches full charge. If your charger is putting out 6, 10, 12, or as some do 30 amps and you left the battery on it overnight you may have fried it. Most batteries come with charging instructions. Ed

You may have destroyed this one.
12.6 Volts is a completely charged battery.

Throw it in the bike and go. The bike will maintain/charge the battery fine.

Does the battery show a different voltage when not connected to the bike?

A proper charger won't overcharge a battery because it only charges up to about 13V. It's possible the battery was defective or it got cooked by being overcharged.

My charger is a motorcycle charger and charge only 1 A.

I charged it during the night (10 hours). While still charging it this morning, it showed 16 v. Without the charger connected, it showed 15.5 v. After an hour it now shows 13.5 v. Unfortunately I didnt measure it right after the first charging, after buying it. I installed it and 5 min later, while switching on the key it only showed 10 v.

I will install it again and wait 5 min, same as yesterday, before switching on the key and measure it.

Would consider having the battery load tested.

It ought to be under warranty.

Good Fortune! :)

Since you used a 1 amp bike charger the battery shouldn't have been damaged. I would return it and exchange it for another. Ed

Same problem this time. It just drained immediately.

I went back with it. They had this better equipment to measure the quality. Completely dead! No ampere. They gave me a new one, which worked great.

I've had some problems with the startup process this year, so this was just the last in a row...

Today, finally, I went for the first longer ride this season. Felt great!

Cheers

That would be a severe overcharge. Sounds like the charger just puts out a constant 1A and does not cut itself off. That may have cooked the battery. A regulating charger never lets the battery voltage go above about 14V.
