dyna s ignition setup problem

I just took my dynas ignition out of a old 79 1000 e motor and am putting it in my 80 1000 b motor. I got it hooked up and timed the 1&4 and I had to have the timing plate all the way to one side. I then tried to time 2&3 and it was about 1/4 inch off. I tried adjusting that right contactor and adjusted it all the way it can. I am about 1/8'' away from the timeing mark. I used a timeing light to set these. What can I do to get this set correct? thanks

Did the timing light have an advance dial on it? Make sure it's set to zero if it does. Bumping that knob leads to a lot of headaches.

If not, then maybe someone with experience on that Dyna unit will know. Could be the rotor position is different for the two bikes or the timing plate is different.

Several of us had similar situation where the Dyna Plate slots had to be elongated most likely due to differences in the timing advancer units but possibly due to performance engine modifications we made as well.

Follow the link for the installation tut with images I found in my installation and re-perform the Static & Dynamic adjustments....

good info there. I actually am using a timing light. Is that a no go? I beleive I might have to elongate those slots. I just didn't think I would have to seeing both motors are bone stock.

Timing light for final but you need to adjust static with the +12Vdc light for TDC initial adjustments if you want to dial them in...

Run through the entire adjustment before opening those slots... You may just find no need on a stock build...

You should have received Dyna installation procedure with your components no... Follow that for everything you need in alignments is there...

Good luck...

You are setting with the advance mark and not the fire mark correct?
