1979 KZ1300 Performance Ignition? was created by paulstanely45
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone was able to ever find a performance ignition system for an 1979 KZ1300. I know it already uses electronic ignition, but is there anything I can put on it better than that?
Is there anywhere online where I can get a brand new igniter module for the bike?
My big concern is that if it fails, I don't know where to get another. If I was to put on an aftermarket ignition system, it would be easily replaceable.

Another thought:
If your pick up coils are good and you're afraid of ignition failure, why not use "Loudhvx's" IC Igniter diagram he made and uses on his GPz550?
I suggest you contact him and see if he can make you a diagram for your 1300. You'll need three GM modules, but they will only work for engines with the mechanical ignition advancers.

A few months ago someone with a 79 1300 emailed me for help on making one of the HEI mods and I think he finished it, but I didn't get a chance to ask him how it turned out. I never got a response back from him on the pickup wire polarity either.
It should work as long as the pickup polarity is right and the pickups generally work the same. I believe the timing rotor (the iron slug part) is the same on the fours and twins.

For those rider's using the 4 pin GM module ignition, I have researched some cross index numbers from the different manufacturers:
AC DELCO
DM 1906 or D1906
WELLS
DR 100
ACCEL
ACC 35361/ACC 35367
PERTRONIX
D2000
CAR QUEST
21040
NAPA ECHLIN
ECH TP45
NIEHOFF
DR 400
BORG WARNER
Select CBE4/CBE22
GM
10482820
Mallory
607
Jegs
555-40600
Moroso
97857
I don't know if you can get this contact cleaner/preservative there, but it's what I use on all my electrical contacts.
www.deoxit.com is the website and is carried in the Radio Shack stores in the U.S. and most any other electronic supply places.

All inline sixes (I have ever heard of) pair 1-6, 2-5, 3-4. Obviously there are two possible firing orders (that you'd want to use). They are the same, really since one is the reverse of the other.
1, 5, 3, 6, 2, 4, or the reverse of that.
Inline sixes are known for being smooth, more so than even v-8's most of the time. The primary balance can be near perfect.

The real question for you gearheads is why is there really only one possible firing order (or its reverse) for the classic American v-8?
You would not believe how many so-called mechanics I've run into who didn't even know the bank angle or crank design etc on their own muscle cars? So many of them seem to think all American v-8s are different, but they are about "60 degrees or so".
